The Beginnings of The Chill Shop

For those of us alive in 2020, it will forever be the year that life as we knew it would change. The whole world was drawn into the Coronavirus pandemic. Everyone has a different experience of how this worldwide trauma affected them.

I was fortunate in that me and my family were able to pivot our lives to be home pretty much all day every day. I even kept a photo journal on social media of the first 100 days staying home. It was my own oddball way of staying connected with family and friends.

As our "new normal" was really starting to set in, I was starting to feel the pull to get out of my desk chair (I ran a digital marketing company: Chill Digital Marketing) and be creative with my hands. Because I was apparently on social media more (with those daily check-ins), I was seeing a lot of ads for tools/supplies to make hand stamped jewelry and keepsakes.

This spawned me to get a beginner kit with Impress Art. I wanted to stamp inspirational words on pieces of jewelry to send to friends and family to put a smile on their faces during these uncertain times we found ourselves in.

I was eager to get started and was pretty much a rookie at it, so that lead to me doing a lot of YouTube searches on how to make hand stamped jewelry (of course Impress Art also has a ton of tutorial videos too!).

If you have ever fallen down the YouTube rabbit hole, then you have a pretty good idea of what happened next. I started watching videos on how to make other types of jewelry. The ones that involved wire wrapping piqued my interest as something I could learn easily.

While I continued to make pieces here and there with the stamping, I started to dabble in wire wrapped jewelry. It started with making some rings.

Then bracelets and necklaces soon followed behind.

As I was gifting pieces to friends and family over several months, I kept hearing "You should sell this stuff!" I really didn't feel like I had the skill set to actually sell what I was making, but the seed was definitely planted.

I don't know about you, but I certainly fall victim to the Shiny Object Syndrome. I wanted to make sure this wasn't just some hobby that I would walk away from in a few months. I made an agreement with myself, if I was still just as excited to be in the creative zone making jewelry after 6 months, then I would consider taking it to the next level.

Well, those 6 months flew by and I kept finding myself wandering away from my marketing desk to my workshop desk. Watching more and more how-to videos and buying online courses to learn even more was becoming a normal day to me.

Then one day I woke up and realized I was starting to feel burdened by all the podcasts and content and client work I was doing in my marketing business that it may be time to consider making a switch. And a switch is exactly what I flipped!

I sat down and really thought about life and this past year+ with the global pandemic and decided life was too short. And I needed to do something that brought joy to me each day....not dread.

I got into the nitty gritty of laying out what a jewelry making business would look like. How I wanted to be in this business. What I wanted to do with this business. And this past spring I started closing down my marketing business (although I still take consulting clients here and there...I don't think I'll ever completely walk away from it), and started designing and making more and more pieces. And as they say...the rest is history.

5 Tips for Fashion Jewelry Care

I have to admit, some of my favorite pieces of jewelry are NOT my expensive precious gems and platinum pieces. They are my everyday fashion pieces. These beauties ironically are a bit more delicate in that precious metal cleaners (think silver polish) are not good for them. And I described them as "everyday", so they are certainly getting worn more often!

I think it's safe to say that pretty much all the items we sell in The Chill Shop today are fashion pieces. Most metal components are plated metals (both gold and silver), and our beads range from semi-precious to glass and crystals to pearls. Oftentimes we will incorporate many different materials in one design.

Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to share 5 tips on how you can take care of your fashion jewelry. Because YOUR favorite piece may not be your most expensive one. 😉

Tip 1: Keep your jewelry dry and clean.

During the day or when you take it off at night, you want to make sure you are keeping your fashion jewelry dry and clean. We send small jewelry cloths in every order we send out. Use this cloth to wipe down the jewelry when you are done wearing it for the day. Oils from you skin can get on the metals when wearing them, so give it a gentle wipe before storing it.

Tip 2: Don’t do dishes, chores or exercise with jewelry on.

As with tip 1 above ☝🏻 , doing the dishes while wearing your fashion jewelry is a big no-no. Take the few seconds to remove your rings and/or bracelets before you dive into the suds. We don’t always know which chemicals are used in the soap, so it’s best to be safe than sorry.

Tip 3: Don’t use jewelry cleaner.

Unless you know for certain that the metals used in your fashion jewelry are sterling silver, gold or platinum, then don’t use jewelry cleaner. The chemicals in these solutions are too harsh for the plated metals that fashion jewelry is typically made with.

Instead, use a soft cloth to wipe away the day’s residue from wearing the piece. All our jewelry comes with a soft cloth for this reason. You can easily use it when you take off your pieces before storing them (as mentioned in #1).

Tip 4: Put it on last; take it off first

You want to make sure you are putting your jewelry on after you have done everything else in your morning routine to get ready. After you apply lotion (you don’t want to have to move it around with lotion on your hands), after you put on perfume and makeup (you don’t want these things landing on your pieces) and after dressing (nothing worse than snagging a favorite piece on clothing and having it break or become misshapen).

Just make jewelry be the last thing you put on at the beginning of the day, and the first thing you take off at the end of the day and you will prolong the life of your pieces.

Tip 5: Store it properly

If you are like me, you have more pieces of jewelry than you know what to do with. And you may have to make further investments to get the right type of storage for you. But the key point here is that you should have something to store your jewelry in.

Hanging necklaces can help keep them from getting into knots. Having spaces for rings will prevent them from scratching each other. Same thing for your earrings.

I got this hanging armoire (that hangs over a door) to keep some of my jewelry. I do end up storing my bracelets in a different jewelry box right now. Eventually, I’ll look for a DIY project on Pinterest to make something.

The key here is to make sure you are storing your pieces in a manner that will protect them. If you don’t have storage just yet, the best thing you can do with our jewelry is to use the boxes we ship our pieces in. Then find a drawer or storage bin to keep those boxes. We also supply tarnish-resistance strips in our boxes to also help protect the pieces from the elements.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if you have economical jewelry pieces in your collection or very expensive pieces, both need to be taken care of. If you remember these 5 tips, no matter the type of jewelry you own, it is sure to keep putting a smile on your face every time you wear it. 😍

Sunscreen & Your Jewelry

Hello March! This is the month that gives us back our sunshine (hint-hint…be sure to set your clocks ahead on March 13th). And it’s also the kickoff month for Spring Break. Woohoo! 🎉

And with Spring Break comes sunscreen. So that got me thinking about sunscreen (or really any lotions) and your jewelry.

Last month I talked about 5 Tips for Fashion Jewelry Care, and this month I want to specifically focus on lotions and your jewelry. Because when you take care of your beauties, they can last for a long time. 🤩

Before heading out into the sun, you make the conscious decision to protect your skin. So before you start applying sunscreen, pop off any jewelry you are wearing. The ingredients in some lotions and sprays are such that they can dull precious and semi-precious gemstones and just about all metals. Even sunscreen that doesn’t have harsh ingredients will still dull your jewelry. And if your pieces have any plastic components, then those too can really be affected.

The same rule applies to any bug spray you may be using while having your fun outdoors. With potentially more chemicals in these sprays and lotions they really can have adverse effects on your jewelry.

If you are at an event by the pool and must be dolled up, then it’s fine to put your jewelry back on after you apply your sunscreen. However, you may want to lightly wipe the areas where your jewelry will be (don't completely remove the sunscreen, but make it a thin layer). There is nothing worse than getting glammed up only to have your jewelry react with the sunscreen leaving green, brown or black smudges on your skin where it comes into contact with your jewelry. Yes, this happened to me.

My coveted watch is my Rolex (sadly it doesn’t get much airtime these days due to the health tracking I do with my Apple Watch). I wore this thing ALL the time. And every Spring Break I’d take off my watch and wedding ring, spray on the sunscreen and put them back on. Only to have a black ring around my wrist. See, I wasn’t too good at cleaning the band on my Rolex. So when I put it back on my sunscreened (yes, I made up that word haha!) wrist, it loosened up all the muck in the band and rubbed it off onto my wrist. Not a pleasant thing to experience. So do better than me and make sure you are keeping your pieces clean. 😉

Also keep in mind if you end up deciding to take a dip in the pool, then you definitely want to remove any jewelry as the chlorine in the pool has a strong potential to ruin your pretties. Being submerged in water for long periods of time can also loosen any glues or adhesives that were used to create your piece, so that’s another reason to take things off before you jump in.

There are too many sunscreen products out there and too many design compilations of jewelry to list out every scenario you may experience. That’s why it’s a good idea to follow the basic recommendations no matter what type of jewelry you are wearing. Take it off to apply sunscreen and take it off if you are cooling off in any type of water. It really just boils down to common sense.

Best Jewelry for your Face Shape

Have you ever wondered if there are certain pieces of jewelry (particularly earrings and necklaces) that would look better on you than others? If so, then this article is for you! And hey….if you are the type to do as you please, then by all means you do you. There are no absolutes in fashion, just suggestions and recommendations.

Take me for example. I have a round face (and a short neck). While I just love long and elegant earrings, most times the really long ones don’t play nice on me. But as you’ll see below, the recommendation for round faces is long earrings. All this to say that these recommendations are generalizations and will not apply to all people that fall into the specific face category.

While there are a couple of face shape categories I don’t cover here, the 5 I do cover are pretty common and most people will fit into one of these categories. These 5 shapes are:

Oval
Round
Rectangle/Oblong
Triangle (inverted)/Heart
Square

I also share examples of jewelry we sell here at The Chill Shop that work with the face shape in each section. Just keep in mind these are products that are available at the time of the release of this blog post.

Let’s get started!

Oval Face

In our first face shape, I am talking to those of you that have an oval shape to your face. It’s longer than it is wider with soft curves at the top and bottom. While this face shape can really accommodate most earring and necklace styles, I do have a few tips to consider.

Stud earrings do really well for oval faces. And while longer earrings can also look nice, you want to be careful to avoid exceptionally long earrings. These can make your face appear longer than it naturally is. Consider some shorter dangle earrings if you don’t want the simplicity of stud earrings. Bright colors can also draw the eyes to either side of your head to also counter the length of your face.

In regards to necklaces, most will look fine with this shape, however, if you stick to shorter necklaces you will find they compliment the oval of your face. Something that lays on your collar bone would look lovely.

Round Face

A round face is just like it sounds, it is as wide as it is tall. Therefore, you want to wear pieces that can help elongate your face. Long vertical pieces can help you do that.

Square shaped stud earrings can bring sharp edges to contrast the circular curve of your face. Or pieces with distinctive vertical lines, like a simple chain drop earring. With the roundness of the face, pieces with lots of angular shapes in them will contrast this shape and look the best.

Necklaces that are long and what I call “chunky”, also do well with round faces. These will give the appearance of elongating the face. They tend to have prominent pendants that pull them down. You also want to avoid necklaces that are above the collar bone.

Rectangle/Oblong Face

This face stays the same width from forehead to chin. There may be slightly smaller size at the top & bottom, not not as defined as Oval Face.

Chandelier style earrings work well with this face shape. Those that incorporate wide round curves in them work best. Avoid angular shaped earrings.

As for necklaces, because the face shape is longer, consider one that is shorter. Think chokers, or ones that lay on the collar bone.

Inverted Triangle/Heart Face

This face shape is wider in the forehead than at the chin. You could also think of it as “V” shaped.

When considering earrings for this face shape, think about flipping that triangle. So for earrings, you may want to look at shapes that are a “right side up” triangle. Think of “opposites attract”, so the opposite direction of a triangle can compliment the face. Chandelier earrings that flair at the bottom can make a good choice.

Shorter necklaces that have a lot of movement (ie: curves) to them will help draw the attention away from the length of the jawline.

Square Face

This last face shape is just as it sounds, square (and please forgive the image for this shape). Typically the jawline is very distinct, giving the shape a squared off effect on the bottom.

Earrings that are large oval hoops or long narrow drop styles can help soften and elongate (respectively) the features of this face type. While we don’t really have any large oval hoop earrings in our inventory, we currently have one long narrow style. However, be on the lookout when our Mother’s Day Collection drops in a couple of weeks for more longer earring selections!

As with the Round Face, this shape too does well with longer necklaces. The curvier the features of the necklace the better, to soften the sharp edges of the face. Princess length (17-19”) necklaces also do well.

At the end of the day, you should get jewelry that speaks to you and makes you happy. But if you struggle finding the right pieces, or you are shopping for someone else, then these tips can certainly help you out.

Getting Back on Track Part 1

I want to start out with the biggest of apologies. Just as I was starting to get things rolling here at The Chill Shop, things hit a serious pause. That’s why I wanted this month’s blog post to share a little behind the scenes of what has been going on. It’s a two-part series, so grab some tea as this may take a while.

Right now it’s November 2022. The last blog I posted was back in April this year. And well, a lot has happened in these last 7 months. Before I get into those details, I want to jump back a little bit further to 2021.

On Father’s Day last year, my Father in law suddenly passed away (in my husband's arms no less). To say it was a painful shock would be an immense understatement. And sadly that was the beginning of a lot starts and stops for The Chill Shop. I was going to launch this business at the end of June 2021. So I pivoted and did a soft launch in August with no big fan fare.

After that, my husband spent a lot of time out of state helping his sister care for their mother whose health was failing (which meant I was single parenting our two boys a lot that fall). Sadly, she ended up passing away in April this year. My husband’s parent’s story is what I love to call a True Love Story. Therefore, it really wasn’t much of a surprise that one wouldn’t last long without the other. And I absolutely cherish the 21 years I got to know them both. They were both so loving and would do absolutely anything for others. HUGE philanthropists. I aspire to be like them.

Through the heavy weight of grief, our family slowly kept going through life. An opportunity presented itself for us to purchase an office condo that went up for sale near our home. This would give me the opportunity to start getting out of the house to work again. While I certainly love what I do, I also appreciate having space between my work and home life. We closed on that property exactly 4 days before leaving for Italy for 12 days.

While our Italy trip had been planned for about a year and a half, all the other things in life were not. So off to Italy we went. It was just me and my two sons (Charlie and Will - which is where Chill comes from) as my husband didn’t want to go out of the country with ailing parents (both parents were still alive when the trip was planned). While it was certainly a trip of a lifetime, we will definitely be back with my husband. We went to Venice, Florence, Assisi, Pompeii, Sorento, Capri and Rome. Yes…it was marvelous and exhausting all at the same time!

In 2020, my oldest son’s 8th grade trip to DC got canceled for obvious reasons. This year, my youngest son got to go on his 8th grade DC trip. My husband and I thought it would be good to take Will to DC this summer so he could get his trip. Just two weeks after getting back from Italy, we were off to DC for 8 days. And I thought being in the nation’s capital for the 4th of July would be a cool experience. It was a very HOT experience! Glad we did it, but I don’t think I’ll be going back during the summer anytime soon.

Not only did we come back from DC with great family memories, but we also came back with COVID. Charlie tested positive on our last day there (the rest of us tested negative), so my husband stayed behind with him, and Will and I flew home. After getting home, Will and I ended up testing positive for COIVD just as Charlie tested negative (hubby stayed negative the whole time), so they flew home to take care of us while we were sick.

Then two weeks after everyone was negative, we were off to our summer cottage in Michigan for 3 weeks. We came home 3 days before school started. So to say our summer was busy doesn’t quite do reality justice. Either way, I’m so grateful for the memories made during this difficult year and a half.

Now that we were properly home for a spell, I reached out to my contractor to finally start work on the remodel I needed to do in the office condo we bought in May (only to have another pause due to another death in the family - it really is too much). While their ability to get things done quickly is awesome, the holdup with approvals and permits has not been fun. But I have all the confidence that things should be done by the end of this year.

Getting Back on Track Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of Getting Back on Track. If you didn’t read Part 1 from last week, then you definitely want to go and read that first.

All that was from 2022. I’m actually getting this blog up in 2024. So what has happened to fill this last gap. Well…for starters, we didn’t get inspections approved from the city on the new office space until just before Christmas of 2023. Yeah…it took a whole year and a half to get the simple remodel done and approved. So that is one “excuse”.

Another more fun explanation (or was I just fed up with the remodel and couldn’t work anyway so came up with something else to do?) is that I turned 50 in 2023. So my gift to myself was to travel somewhere every month last year. And I pretty much filled up the year.

January: Caribbean Cruise (my first)

February: Costa Rica (another first)

March: Hawaii - Oahu (first time on this island, had been to Kauai and The Big Island before)

April: NYC to see Depeche Mode & Asbury Park, NJ; then back again to tour colleges with my oldest.

For the college tour with Will, we visited Columbia and NYU.

May: New Orleans to see The Cure

June: 2 different trips visiting more colleges with my oldest

The first trip was to Boston to visit MIT, BYU, Northeastern, Tufts and Yale. Spoiler alert...his Early Decision school was Northeastern and he got in! So I will have many more Boston trips in my future 😊 The second trip was to Pittsburgh (U of Pitt), Philadelphia (UPenn & Temple) and finally to Washington DC (U of Maryland & Georgetown).

July: More College Tours (this time West Coast). Seattle (UW) and San Luis Obispo (SLO, Ca)

August: Harbor Beach, MI...our family's happy place

September: Pearl Jam in Chicago

October: Greece...and I got COVID on the flight out, but I wasn't sick at all, so I managed.

November: Carlsbad, CA for Thanksgiving

December: Didn't go anywhere this month, so my final month of travel for my birthday was actually January when I went to Kauai, Hawaii with my sister.

And that concludes my 12 months of travel for my 50th trip around the sun. Going forward, I will have more content pertinent to my jewelry business. I can't wait for you to follow me on this journey!

We now have In-Person Workshops!

Now that I have shared all the “things” that happened the last couple of years, it’s time to dive into the present (and maybe some teasers for the future). As I shared previously, I bought an office condo back in 2022. And this office condo has a great layout to offer in-person workshops to get other people making jewelry too.

In a prior chapter of my life when I had my digital marketing business, I used to teach workshops for local businesses on how to optimize their digital footprints. Due to that setup, I already had all the furniture and such to create another classroom. But instead of rows of tables facing forward, we’ll be changing things up a bit when we get crafty.

Sadly our first class was canceled due to a snow storm, but I’m certainly looking forward to the next one coming up in a couple of days (at the time I’m writing this blog). My intention is to start with 2 classes per month, and as I get my sea legs under me, I intend to increase to 4 classes per month. And who knows….maybe I’ll have even more each month! A girl can dream!

I’ve always been the type of person to share what I learn. So I’m not in the jewelry making game to keep everything to myself. I want to spread the creativity and engage others to find it in themselves like I did. Most people have such busy lives these days that we find it hard to find “me” time. And I just think that is such a tragedy. I want to create a place where people can come and build a sense of community while doing something relaxing. Here in Boulder, it’s not such a big city that you can’t get to know your neighbors, and I like that.

Not only can getting a sense of “fitting in” with your community be a positive affect on your psyche, but there are LOTS of studies that prove creating art can give you many different health benefits as well.

Emotional Expression: Art therapy provides a non-verbal means for individuals to express complex emotions that may be difficult to articulate verbally. Through the creative process, individuals can explore and communicate their feelings, leading to increased self-awareness and emotional insight.
Stress Reduction: Engaging in artistic activities can promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. The process of creating art can serve as a form of mindfulness, helping individuals to focus on the present moment and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and tension.
Self-Exploration and Insight: Art therapy encourages self-exploration and reflection, allowing individuals to gain insight into their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through the exploration of imagery and symbolism, individuals can uncover underlying issues and develop a deeper understanding of themselves.
Enhanced Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence: Completing art projects and witnessing personal growth in artistic skills can boost self-esteem and self-confidence. Success in the creative process can foster a sense of accomplishment and mastery, leading to improved self-perception and self-worth.
Coping Skills Development: Art therapy provides individuals with a constructive outlet for coping with difficult emotions and life challenges. Through the exploration of different art mediums and techniques, individuals can develop adaptive coping strategies and build resilience in the face of adversity.
Communication and Social Skills: For individuals who struggle with verbal communication, art therapy offers an alternative mode of expression. Art can serve as a bridge for communication, facilitating interactions and fostering connections with others. Group art therapy sessions can also promote socialization and peer support.
Trauma Processing and Healing: Art therapy has shown promise in helping individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences. Through the creation of art, individuals can externalize their trauma, gain a sense of control, and work towards integration and resolution.

By holding these classes in my local community, it gives me the opportunity to showcase my work IRL as well. Since my jewelry store is an e-commerce business, there aren't a lot of opportunities for people to physically see my products. By having my workshops, I can also give potential customers an opportunity to see my stuff as well.

At the end of the day we are all humans, and in turn it means we crave human interaction. By opening up my space to invite people in my community to congregate and create, I’m feeding that need for human connection. Celebrating Mothers

For about 18 years now, I’ve associated the month of May with Mother’s Day. While I always celebrated my mom with handmade cards in grade school to jewelry when I got older, it was always just a special day to celebrate her. However, 18 years ago I was pregnant for my first Mother’s Day (although some may say I wasn’t a mother until the next year when my first child was actually outside my womb). But now I just sort of associate the whole month of May as the Month of Moms!

I would like to also extend my heartfelt condolences to those that no longer have their mothers with them. While my mother is still alive and lives in the same town as me (for which I am grateful for), I do know the feeling of loss at this time. I was so very fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with my mother-in-law, Happy. The loss is still relatively new as she passed in 2022, and we had her burial on Mother’s Day that year. I miss her very much.

For those of you that do not have good memories or relationships with your mothers, you can take this opportunity to cherish and praise whomever was the guiding light for you in years past or today. In the end, it’s always good to show acknowledgement to those that provided strength and support to you in your life journey.

Celebrate your mothers (or special people) this month with the loudest of voices! Moms certainly do a lot to make all our lives easier, so spend some time thinking about how you can honor her on this special day.

Well, it’s definitely the season of graduations! While college graduations started last month, June is when high school graduations are in full swing. I should know, my oldest, Will, has just graduated highschool himself. Our area gets out a little earlier than most places, so his graduation was actually on May 25th. However, as this blog post is getting published, I’m in California attending my niece’s graduation. These young-uns are about to see what adulting is all about!

In light of the graduation season, I thought I would spend some time talking about graduation and offer some unique gift ideas. Of course I would love for you to get something from The Chill Shop, but there are also many other awesome things you can consider for that graduate in your life. And let’s be honest, I think parents are significantly overlooked during this time. These kiddos just DO.NOT.KNOW what we parents sacrificed to get them to this point. A funny quote from one of my cousins was “I just have to keep them alive until they are 18. Then I’ve done my job!” So true cuz, so true.

For The Graduate

Hands down, I think the most highly coveted gift you can give a graduate would be cold hard cash. But if you are like my mother, and you like to give a thoughtful gift that speaks to you knowing their likes (and want to give them something tangible to open), then you may find a suggestion on this list more appealing than cash.

Laptop or Tablet - Let’s face it…dorm rooms are small. So lugging a tower PC off to college may not be the best use of their limited space. And after high school (and possibly middle school), whatever computer they were using at home may need an upgrade.
Gift Cards - These are a step up from plain cash, so you can either find something from their favorite store, or something like Amazon or Target could allow them to get a wide variety of items they may want or need.
Dorm Essentials - While not all college bound kiddos will be at a school that requires (or even has) dorms, for those that will have the limited space they provide, dorm essentials could come in handy. Reach out to the graduate directly to see if they have received the list from their school of what these essentials may be.
Backpack or Messenger Bag - Pretty self explanatory, but they will need a method of transportation for that new laptop or tablet.
E-Reader - Let’s face it, college isn’t what it used to be. Some schools will have their text books 100% digitally. With an e-reader, you can reduce eye strain that may come with reading these books on a computer screen.
Smartphone Accessories - Another great way to show you know the graduate, by giving them a simple way to express themselves with their cell phone. Because if I must be brutally honest, chances of them having a flip phone are slim to none.
Personalize Items - Whether you take a DIY class and make a special gift for the graduate or go to a store that can personalize items, it certainly brings a special touch to the gift when it’s personal to them.
Subscription Service - With all the crackdowns on streaming services, this may be a way for you to help that young adult in your life be able to keep up on the latest shows (because we all need mindless videos to break the monotony of studying all the time). So maybe a Netflix account or MAX account. If they will be in an apartment, maybe a meal delivery service (like Blue Apron) could be a good option.
Travel Gear - If the graduate is going to school out of state, then maybe a nice luggage set to help them get back home in style during breaks would be a good idea. Or even something more simple like a travel pillow or toiletry bag.
Cooking Appliances - If the graduate is in a dorm, you will need to know what’s allowed and what isn’t, but if things like a microwave are allowed it could make their life a bit more convenient.
Experience Gifts - Maybe their favorite band is coming to their new home away from home. Getting a ticket to the show could give them some serious feel good vibes.

Of course this isn’t an exhaustive list. At the very least, maybe it gets your juices flowing on being creative in what you get them. It can also alleviate some of the stress on the parents to make sure their new graduate has all they need for the next chapter in their lives. I also want to point out that many of these items are just as essential for those graduates that are jumping right into the workforce and college just isn't in the cards for them.

For The Parents

Let’s face it…the saying “it takes a village” didn’t come out of thin air. It came from the energy it takes to raise humans to adulthood. So why don’t we celebrate the parents too? The sacrifices we made for the past 18 years are incredible when you look back on them. Starting with all the diaper changes to busted knees, through learning to ride a bike (and who bought that bike?), into the confusing and hazy days of puberty and figuring out how the world works. It was the parents that’s were right by their kids keeping the guardrails up.

Now I don’t intend my words to disregard any experiences someone may have had where parental figures did not provide that type of guidance. I have worked alongside a local non-profit that supports young adults as they transition out of the foster care system into adulthood. My own father passed away when I was 13, so I know firsthand how hard it was for my mother to raise me and my two younger siblings all on her own. Again…it takes a village. So if you (or someone you know) has a unique situation in which you/their birth parents were not in the picture…when I talk about “parents” this could be any adult in your/their life that helped you along the way.

So I don’t think it’s absurd to also give tokens of appreciation to the parents during graduation time. Here are a few ideas of what this could look like:

Personalized Keepsake - This could be a small 4x6 frame of the family taken at graduation.
Relaxation Gift - Parents worked HARD to get their kiddo through high school. Maybe a spa day at a local spa is in order. Or a gift basket with home spa essentials (like candles and bath bombs).
Weekend Getaway - If you can swing it, get them a weekend away gift! It could even be a staycation location.
Cooking Class - Maybe there is a local class showing how to make delicious meals for two. It may have been a while since they only cooked for two. They will need to rewire their brains on what to snag at the store!
Home Improvement Gift - Finances may be tight for the parents as they pay for college for their new graduate. A little help with a Home Depot Gift card or or piece of new furniture may help them with any home sprucing they want to do.

While there are many other suggestions out there on what you could get the parents, these are just a few ideas to get those gears turning. And let’s face it, even a simple card of recognition can go a long way to making these parents feel validated.

The Crazy Days of Summer

I was going to call this blog the lazy days of summer but realized it’s more like Crazy Days of Summer (at least for me). In addition to high school graduation for my son Will, I also went out to California for my niece’s graduation. Then I flew to Las Vegas for good times with the hubs and friends. After a brief setback due to heat exhaustion while lounging by the pool, we rallied as saw Dead & Co. at the Sphere. DEFINITELY recommend seeing a show there. We also just celebrated our son Charlie’s 16th birthday. And yes, he passed his driving test! So he is a free boy now! No time for the weary as I prepared for my next trip.

But before my next trip, it was a night out to see the Rolling Stones, with Widespread Panic opening the concert. What a great show. Back in 2005 when Bill and I got married, we were lucky to get Karl Denson to play at our wedding. We got to hear him play again that night as he’s touring with The Rolling Stones. Always good to hear Karl play his sax.

Taking a Plane to Europe
Right now I’m packing for a family trip to Spain. This trip is a graduation trip for my son and niece. I will be traveling all over the country with 3 teenagers! I may have actually lost my mind haha!

The last time I went to Europe with my kids (which was Italy in 2022), we were with a tour group/company. This trip, I’m the organizer. It is a bit hard to plan tours when you’ve never been to a place. Hopefully I did an ok job and we all have a great time. My family does a lot of sightseeing, walking, and pool lounging on these trips. That means it’s time to put together my favorite clothes, a practical itinerary, and of course–the accessories.

I bring clothing that’s easy to walk around in such as white and blue cotton shirts, comfortable shorts, cute skirts, and several swimsuits. After my fall in Costa Rica where I injured my leg earlier this year, I’ll be bringing practical sandals and walking shoes. I bring several pool cover ups and cardigans for traveling and chillier nights. I’m sure I’ll also pick up some fun items while in Spain too!

On these trips, I like to go shopping at local boutiques. It’s always great to arrive with some of my own accessories though, so I look and feel my best. Most of my pieces are silver (I’m just not a gold gal) I do have a nose ring as well, which never comes out (unless I’m getting an MRI…then it’s gotta go). It’s silver (actually stainless steel), so don’t worry, it coordinates 😉.

Considering the weather in Spain, I’ll pack my big sunnies because you know it’s hella hot right now. We plan on traveling to a couple inland cities, and the temperature gets up there during the day. Some of my favorite pieces to wear are beaded necklaces with aqua, soft white, and blue beads. If you want to get in on the vaca vibes, I’ve got a new collection coming out just in time!

Back to School

I can’t believe the Back To School season is upon us. By the time this blog hits our website, some places will already be back in school. That just blows my mind. This year, our BTS (no, I’m not talking K-Pop here) is quite different. Our youngest is still home and will be a Junior in high school. Our oldest will be heading off to college for his Freshman year. THAT is a big change for us. Fortunately, my husband and I will be by his side for the move in days. I would die if he told me not to be there!

That brings me to things we can all do to make this season run smoothly for each of us. While I still vividly recall the excitement of getting fresh new clothes for the start of school, raising 2 boys was certainly a different experience. They never pined for new clothes at the start of the year. In fact, my oldest has refused to let me buy him a new backpack since like 8th grade! Yes…he is going off to college with this ratty old thing 🤦🏼‍♀️

Preparation

If you want to feel prepared for the upcoming school year (whether you have littles in the house or you are a young adult venturing out on your own), then a little prep work can go a long way. There are 3 things you can look at to get you started:

Check out the Plan To Eat app (this is a referral link from me, there is a small compensation should you sign up which is no added amount to you). My family has been using this app since January 2019. I absolutely love it. In our household, I do the meal planning and shopping, and my husband does the cooking. I’m a picky eater, so its really easy to find a recipe online, import it into the app, and then he has all the instructions he needs to make the meal. It also generates a shopping list you can use at the store. And they are constantly introducing new features.

In our house, we use Google Calendar to keep everyone’s schedules running smoothly. If you have another calendar app/tool you prefer, then stick with it. Just make sure you have a calendar or color for each member of your family. As I mentioned, our oldest is going off to college 2 time zones away, but I still put his schedule in the calendar so I know when not to bug him with FaceTime calls 🤣

There is one aspect of the modern era that I struggle with: a clean inbox. Take the time before the onslaught of school to get your email inbox as clean as you can. You don’t want to miss any important emails that come from the school(s) your kid(s) attend. There is nothing worse for their little minds than being the kid that couldn’t go on the field trip because mom or dad didn’t sign the permission slip. Or god forbid you forgot to pay tuition 😱and their college education is suspended.

Clothes & Supplies

Next up is the dreaded clothes and supplies lists.This is an area where our modern day technologies can come in handy. Why waste gas and money going to the store, when you can order school supplies online? As with most of America, we tend to get a lot from Amazon. Let’s face it, it’s easy and convenient. While you may need to physically go clothes shopping (because kids DO NOT STOP GROWING), at least the paper and pencils can be done online.

It wouldn’t be a blog on The Chill Shop’s website if I didn’t do a little plug on what we have to offer. My life is revolving around dorm preparation. And here are some things I learned at my son’s orientation last month:

Air purifier (dorm rooms get stinky!)
Ship to room services for move in.
Dorm sized micro/fridge combo (the fridge shuts off power when the microwave is being used…cuts down on blown circuits…who knew!)
Most dorm rooms don’t have a trash can…so bring one.
Bring your clothes in a collapsable duffle bag. Then you don’t have to store a huge hardshell suitcase during the semester.
Shower shoes for communal bathrooms

Stay Grounded

Whether you are a stressing parent or college student, mental health should always be paramount. Start routines of self help or mental health. One obvious way is with meditation. If you use Apple Music, they have a whole channel dedicated to Meditation. I pop in my earbuds, set a timer for 10-20 minutes (depending on how much time I have) and hit shuffle on that channel. Never fails to refresh me during the day. I also use the app, Calm, as well as Insight Timer. Those two are good if you prefer guided meditation sessions.

If you need more support than a meditation app, be sure you have professionals (like a therapist or life coach) lined up before the height of stress sets in. If you are in college, there are many resources available to you, you just have to ask. If you are a parent of younger kiddos, then check your local community connections for references they may have.

Another great way to stay grounded is set up some coffee or happy hour dates with friends so you can all support each other in the stresses of back to school. Trust me, you are not the first, nor the last, to experience the stress of school. Rally your tribe to help each other get through this.

Nature in Jewelry

Back in my 20’s I had a love of flowers in jewelry. I was so fascinated by the technique of capturing and preserving nature in these clear baubles. Of course I didn’t know it was called resin or how people even made the pieces. I just knew the ring, necklace, bracelet and earrings that I had were some of my most coveted possessions. Fast forward 20+ years, and here I am making these same types of jewelry.

One type of epoxy/resin that you have to mix together has an A component and a B component. That type is used today in many applications. The piece of art I made in a class in Costa Rica earlier this year used the A/B mixture. This type of resin uses time and air to cure, or get hard. For smaller pieces you may have to wait 24 hours and larger pieces 46-72 hours. The curing time has many factors that go into it like ambient air temperature, thickness of the epoxy, if there are any fillers in it, etc.

The type of resin that I work with is cured or hardened by UV light. Smaller pieces like the ones we have in our September Nature in Resin Collection can be cured in as quickly as 2 minutes. I also didn’t have to worry about getting the mixed ratio of the A/B epoxy right, as the UV resin is premixed. You just have to make sure you keep it out of direct sunlight while you are working with it, so it doesn’t harden on you.

Because I’m not in the business of creating my own unique molds (yet….never say never!), we did use premade molds for all pieces. The types of molds used in resin jewelry are silicon molds. As witchcraftery (yes, that’s my word and I’m sticking to it) as curing uv resin is, the mystical features continue in that it does not stick to silicon. I could probably google the chemical reasonings behind all this and regurgitate it to you, but you can do it too. Even though we use molds for the shapes, we used our own creativity to decide what would go in the pieces.

Should you purchase one of our resin pieces (or own some from somewhere else), there are a few things you need to keep in mind in regards to care. While the resin itself can withstand water, the metals we use to finish the pieces could tarnish with excessive water exposure. You also want to be careful exposing the resin to prolonged periods of sunlight (as that is the most natural uv light out there) as it can cause yellowing over time. So if you are planning a day at the pool, don’t wear your resin jewelry.

Alcohol could cause issues with the surface of your resin piece. Most perfumes are alcohol based, so you need to be careful to not wear perfume on your skin where the jewelry piece will rest (like on your wrist if wearing a bracelet). Oils are another culprit that could harm the surface of your resin piece. One method to help fight against body oils is a dish soap that can fight grease (did someone say Dawn??). A soft cloth (like microfiber) with the soap and warm water you can easily clean your piece.

In conclusion, dried plant resin jewelry is a breathtaking fusion of art and nature that allows us to carry a piece of the natural world with us wherever we go. By encapsulating the beauty of dried plants in resin, we are able to create unique pieces that celebrate the wonders of the natural world. Celebrating Survivors

It’s October…and that means it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older, but I swear more and more people seem to be developing breast cancer. Maybe it’s because it hit close to home so it seems like it’s everywhere. I’m really not sure of the reason, but it doesn’t really matter. We should all be vigilant with our health, so each year, I will jump on the bandwagon to promote awareness for this disease (even though I sell jewelry online).

Maybe you can say I’m lucky in that breast cancer doesn’t run in my family. I know there are both genetic and environmental influences for this type of cancer, and well, it just doesn’t exist in my family…or at least it didn’t. In the fall of 2011 (I think on Halloween to be exact), my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She apparently had a red spot on her right breast that she didn’t really pay much mind to. By the time she was diagnosed, she was at Stage IIIC (which is the last stage before it’s considered to have metastasized).

She opted for a double mastectomy and it was not an easy road. At the time of the mastectomy, she chose to also do reconstruction. She was a true warrior going through chemo and radiation (working the whole time!). Sadly, almost a year later dealing with all of this, her body started rejecting the implants for the reconstruction. The surgeon said they were going to go in and just remove the 1 side even though I asked for both to be removed (he said the infection had not crossed the mid-line). And I kid you not…no sooner than she had the one surgery, she had to go back in to remove the second implant! Sometimes we just know better than our doctors.

Through all that craziness, she was done with both surgeries and able to spend Christmas with family (and not in the hospital) that year. And really ever since then, she has been a true trooper. When she passed the 10 year mark and was taken off the post cancer meds, I was truly grateful. And then last year when I took her to her annual oncologist appointment, he said she didn’t really need to come see him anymore. So yes, you are assuming correctly that I’m fortunate to still have my mother with me today, 13 years later. 🥰

When I first started dating my now husband, his father was just 2 years past a breast cancer diagnosis himself. Yes, men can and do get breast cancer too. His diagnosis was in 1999 and he received a new procedure called sentinel node biopsy. While it may be thestandard today, it was cutting edge back then.

My father in-law was not one to do things just a little. Or to just take others’ words as how things should be done. He did research and advocated for himself. He even started a breast cancer research partnership with his surgeon, Dr. Nathanson. And every year he would be part of the Team Angels Foundation fundraiser.

As I age, my brain gets a little foggy on dates, but sometime around 2009 or 2010, my mother in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her’s was found early and only required a lumpectomy. She was very lucky and didn’t need chemo or radiation.

In 2018, my sister in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer. There have been many advancements over the years from our parents’ diagnosis to hers. She had true angels working their magic with her double mastectomy and reconstruction. To this day I am in awe of her strength and so blessed she is here for her children and our family.

Just 2 days ago (from the time I’m writing this blog post), someone I know was just telling me that she lost her sister to breast cancer in April this year. Her sister was only 33 years old. My heart was breaking for her.

We had only gotten into that conversation because of what I just went through. In August, we were at our summer cottage and I felt a little knot in my right breast. A year or so ago, in that same spot, I had gotten a red bump and had my doctor check it out during my annual physical. She said it felt like a zit/cyst and not to worry about it. It did go away and I thought nothing of it until feeling this little knot in the same spot. So I didn’t want to dismiss it and went in for a mammogram and ultrasound. It did end up being a sebaceous cyst, and I am beyond thankful. Had it not been a cyst, I’m glad I’malways on top of my health and would’ve caught anything nefarious early.

Be on the lookout in the next week or so for us to drop some new Breast Cancer Awareness pieces in the shop. Any items from this collection sold through the end of the month (10/31/24) will have 50% of the profits donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

As a society, we will devote specific days, weeks or months to bring awareness to various diseases (with October being for Breast Cancer). One day we will have the technology to nip cancer in the ass with a simple shot or zap of a laser, but until then, we must all be aware of changes in our bodies. Therefore, we should ALL be checking our breasts for lumps, knots and any new things that pop up. Women AND men alike.

I used to relate myself to Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. Someone would ask me how I was doing, and I was always like “I’m alive” (yes, in that mopy sing-song voice he has). All I could see were the negatives in life. “I’m so broke”, “I got a flat tire today”, “My coworkers don’t pull their weight”. When instead I could’ve seen “I’m thankful I have a roof over my head”, “I’m glad that guy was in the parking lot and could change my flat tire”, “I’m grateful to have a job”. The day I recognized that in myself was the first day of changing the narrative of my state of being. And writing in a gratitude journal is a big part of not going back to that “Debbie Downer” place.

January is a month that symbolizes fresh beginnings. The start of a whole new year. So it is fitting that I am starting a new series of handmade jewelry collections this year that will be all about birthstones. Before I dive into this month’s stone, I thought I would share a little history on where birthstones came from.

History of Birthstones

For thousands of years, birthstones have been intertwined in many ancient beliefs, cultural traditions, and astrology. There are some who believe the origins of birthstones come from the Book of Exodus, more specifically the Breastplate of Aaron. There were 12 stones in this breastplate that became associated with the 12 months in the year. Thus the tradition of each month having a specific stone came to be.

Whether you believe that or not, it can be shown through archaeological discoveries that gemstones have been used for a very long time to represent many different things. So why not a whole month?

How Birthstones Entered Jewelry Design

In 1912, the American National Retail Jewelers Association (now the American Gem Society), created a standardized list of gemstones linked to each month. This allowed consumers to choose gifts and celebrate birthdays. And with that, let’s see what they chose for January….

Let’s face it, April's birthstone, the diamond, is renowned for its unparalleled brilliance and strength, making it one of the most desirable gemstones in the world. Turquoise is basically the cool aunt of gemstones - ancient, wise, and somehow still stylish. It’s one of the oldest known gemstones and has been loved for thousands of years by cultures around the world. Ancient Egyptians used Turquoise in jewelry and amulets, Native American tribes set it into silver and used it in ceremonial pieces, and Persian royalty basically treated Turquoise like their favorite color.

Tanzanite is harder than Turquoise, but still not as tough as diamonds or sapphires. So it’s a “be gentle, but not overprotective” situation.

Avoid hard knocks – Don’t wear your Tanzanite ring to the gym, while moving furniture, or during your sudden urge to rearrange the entire house at midnight.
Keep it cool – Extreme temperature changes can stress the stone. No boiling water, no intense heat.
Clean with care – Use warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush or cloth. Skip ultrasonic or steam cleaners—they can be too intense.
Safe storage – Store separately or in a soft-lined box so it doesn’t get scratched or scratch softer stones.

For my handmade Winter Wonderland jewelry collection, I leaned hard into stones that feel like winter without feeling cold:

Quartz crystals – Clear, faceted, and sparkly, like frozen raindrops that decided to level up and become jewelry.

If summer at the beach had a jewelry box, we’re pretty sure Seaside Serene would be inside it.

Our June collection, Seaside Serene, was designed to capture the peaceful, sun-washed beauty of the shore through soft color, luminous texture, and timeless materials. With a palette of peach, white, teal, and cream, this collection feels like an early morning walk by the water—calm, refreshing, and just a little dreamy.

This collection includes nine pieces total: three necklaces, three bracelets, and three pairs of earrings. Within the collection are three coordinating sub-sets, each with its own distinct personality while still blending beautifully into the larger Seaside Serene story.
