February Birthstone: Amethyst

Amethyst February Birthstone History Meaning and Care

Amethyst: The February Birthstone

When it comes to February, no gem more perfectly captures the essence of this winter month than the stunning amethyst. Known for its captivating purple hue, amethyst has been cherished for centuries, not only for its beauty but also for its purported mystical and healing properties. As the birthstone for February, amethyst holds profound significance and a rich history that continues to enchant and intrigue enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Properties of Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of quartz and is well-regarded for its striking violet color, which can range from a light lavender to a deep, rich purple. This vibrant color is the result of the presence of iron and natural radiation within the quartz crystal. Often associated with tranquility and serene beauty, amethyst has captivated humans for centuries, gracing everything from the ornaments of ancient nobility to contemporary jewelry pieces.

One of the most fascinating aspects of amethyst is its reputation for providing protection and calmness. The stone has been historically thought to ward off intoxication and overindulgence. Indeed, the name "amethyst" itself comes from the Greek word "amethystos," which means "not intoxicated." Ancient Greeks and Romans would drink from amethyst-studded goblets in the belief that it would prevent drunkenness and promote clarity of mind. I think I need to go find an amethyst goblet for myself! 🥴

History of Amethyst as February’s Birthstone

The designation of amethyst as the birthstone for February has deep historical roots. As Last month in the blog, A Year of Birthstones, I shared the biblical origins of birthstones. While modern birthstone lists have evolved over time, they continue to be influenced by ancient traditions and astrology.

Birthstones throughout the year

In the 15th century, the idea that specific gemstones correspond to months gained popularity in Europe. Amethyst was chosen for February likely because of its association with the Roman goddess of love, Juno (not to be confused with Venus, thought to be the goddess of “falling in love” whereas Juno was the goddess of “staying in love”). Celebrated during February’s renowned and romantic festivals, this gemstone was believed to symbolize a fruitful and loving marital relationship.

Caring for Your Amethyst Jewelry

Amethyst is relatively durable, with a Mohs hardness rating of 7, making it suitable for a variety of jewelry applications, from rings to necklaces. However, like all precious gems, amethyst requires proper care to maintain its luster and brilliance over time.

How to care for your amethyst jewelry

Here are some essential tips for caring for your amethyst jewelry:

  1. Avoid Prolonged Sun Exposure: Amethyst can fade over time if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods. When not wearing your amethyst pieces, store them in a dark, cool place to preserve their color intensity.
  2. Clean with Mild Solutions: The best way to clean amethyst is by gently scrubbing it with a soft toothbrush in a solution of mild dish soap and warm water. Rinse the stone thoroughly after washing to remove any soap residue, and dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  3. Keep Away from Harsh Chemicals: Amethyst should not be exposed to harsh chemicals, such as bleach or ammonia, as these can damage the stone's surface. Remove your jewelry when cleaning or when you're likely to come into contact with such substances.
  4. Store Properly: When storing your amethyst jewelry, keep each piece separate from other gemstones to prevent scratches. Consider using a soft pouch or a fabric-lined jewelry box.
