While you can certainly spend money on a gift, you can also make something yourself to give to them. Maybe you found a pretty rock on a walk that reminded you of them. If it’s appropriate, you can give them that rock. Or press a leaf or flower in a book and give it to them. There are numerous ways you can show your appreciation through gifts. Although let’s be honest, if you want to give me diamonds, I would not turn them away! 😉

If you are just getting started with journaling, start small. At the end of each day, think of one thing that was positive that day. You can start so small that you simply say you are grateful to have made it through the whole day. The next day, choose something different that went right that day. Over time, you will find that you can list 2-3 things each day to be grateful for.

I used to relate myself to Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. Someone would ask me how I was doing, and I was always like “I’m alive” (yes, in that mopy sing-song voice he has). All I could see were the negatives in life. “I’m so broke”, “I got a flat tire today”, “My coworkers don’t pull their weight”. When instead I could’ve seen “I’m thankful I have a roof over my head”, “I’m glad that guy was in the parking lot and could change my flat tire”, “I’m grateful to have a job”. The day I recognized that in myself was the first day of changing the narrative of my state of being. And writing in a gratitude journal is a big part of not going back to that “Debbie Downer” place.
